There are a number of things a First Class Petty Officer can do from the time he/she makes board to the deadline for correspondence submission. Chiefs are standing by ready to review your package. Here are a couple of tips that will help you prepare.

1. Order you CD from bupers online containing your service record.

2. Verify your CD against your service record for missing information i.e. qualifications, awards, evals etc.

3. Make sure you have the latest NAVADMIN to confirm the deadline for submission of correspondence and address to mail correspondence.

4. The Navy Correspondence Manual (SECNAVINST 5216.5) can be really helpful when drafting the letter to the board and also adding enclosures to the package.

5. Don't wait to the last minute to send in your package. Get your package in the mail as soon as possible. Also verify that your package has been received.

6. Verify your PSR and ESR through BUPERS Online for any missing evals.

7. Make sure evaluations dates are in chronological order.

8. Make sure submissions are legible if not be prepared to resubmit it to the board.

9. Rule of thumb: When sending correspondence if the board has it on file, do not send it again.

10. Personal awards and History assignments should be verified.

11. Keep Page 4 updated with current PQS and qualifications.

12. Check, Check, and Re-check for mistakes the selection board view your package and service record as your responsibility.


A binder with your evals, awards and or page 4 could come in handy when having a Chief review your package. In this binder you could have the following items:
- Awards
- Evals
- Letter to the board
- Page 4
- Letters of designations

With all your evals in this binder the Chief advise you on what collateral duties you should get involved in, what commands you should take in the future or whats preventing you from being selected. 




 
 Make sure you have a copy of your letter to the board in the binder.
