In today's high operational tempo most Sailors already have at least one pin if not two. Competitive Sailors have completed a recent successful sea deployment as a Chief or LPO. They have also completed a successful Individual Augmentation (IA) or GSA assignment.  Many senior Sailors E-6 through E-8 have an Associate or Bachelor's Degree.

If you are interested in getting an extra edge on the competition, there are a couple of courses that shall show the board that you are willing to take the extra step to move up to the next paygrade.

First there is the Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education Course. It
is a stand-alone web-based course that uses multi-media instruction. The course contains a pre-test, section knowledge checks (quizzes), and a final examination. In order to receive a completion certificate, all learning modules and tests must be completed, a minimum final examination grade of 80% must be achieved, and a completed electronic course evaluation/feedback form is required.  Registration is open to all components’ (active duty, reserves, Guard) senior enlisted in the pay grades of E-6 to E-9.  Prerequisites: None. Although not a requirement, you should have already completed your rank required Service PME prior to registering in this course.  The course contains several learning modules of various lengths and totals 40 hours of learning content. It is “self-paced” on an asynchronous schedule*. The overall length of time it takes a student to complete the course is dependent upon the student’s schedule and personal commitment.  Although this course is “self-paced” there is a course completion date requirement. Students have approximately 90 days from the initial registration date to complete the course. Students that have not completed the course within this period will be automatically dropped from the course without notice. Dropped students desiring to re-register will have to start the course over from the beginning. Students may voluntarily withdraw from the course at anytime. Students that voluntarily withdraw and later desire to re-register will have to start the course over from the beginning. The site is  http://www.jfsc.ndu.edu/schools_programs/se_jpme/enroll.asp.
