Nobody wants to toot their own horn. Sailors feel that their efforts should be recognized. Sometimes submitting yourself for an award is the only way to be recognized.

Recognition

Like many, I don't like to brag.  I feel that if what I am doing is noteworthy, then somebody should recognize me.  But with the number of people the LPO/LCPO/DIVO's supervise/manage, recognizing the efforts of the Sailor can be difficult.
So to make your efforts more obvious, submit yourself in for an award.  Think of it as a rough draft/brag sheet.  When your supervisors see what you have done, they will weigh in what they observed.
You won't always get formally recognized, but you may have just opened their eyes to your accomplishments.  This is one of those cases where you just swallow your pride and do what's right for you.  Only you control your career.
